The S. Cannizzaro Industrial Technical High School participated in the first transnational mobility in Germany as part of the Erasmus + project “I am here too.”
A delegation of teachers led by their Principal, Mrs.Giuseppina Montella traveled to Berlin from April 29 to May 3 to discuss the inclusion of students with special educational needs in European schools. The project was developed by Maltese partners and involves teachers from the following countries: Malta, Germany, Turkey and Italy. During the visit, educators participated in numerous meetings and interactive activities on diversity challenges, identifying barriers to full participation and learning of students with special educational needs in schools of all levels. Planning interventions to support diversity in schools included curriculum adaptations, differentiated lesson design, role modeling practices, yoga relaxation techniques to be used with students in the classroom, peer bullying, and, finally, a visit to an inclusive school with pupils with intellectual difficulties, learning disabilities, and social distress, where alternative practices, assessment techniques, materials, and tools used were observed.
In addition to the practical training activities, guided tours to several important places in Berlin were an integral part of the program. These included Alexanderplatz, the Brandenburg Gate, the medieval district of Nikolai, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag, and the city of Potsdam with its “German Versailles.”
Principal Mrs. Giuseppina Montella and teachers Mrs. Cinzia Melfa, Mrs. Donatella De Marco, and Mr. Gaetano Chiarenza underscored the importance of this Berlin experience, characterizing it as intense and highly formative, as it facilitated interaction and the exchange of pedagogical approaches among educators from diverse nations.
